Purpose of Role :
Weir Marine Engineering is currently looking for a full-time Naval Systems Specialist or a Senior Technologist to join our Naval Engineering Test Establishment (NETE) team located at our customer’s facilities in Halifax, providing engineering, technical and logistical support services to the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and allied nations on an array of weapon systems and related support equipment. This is a full-time and permanent position.
Since 1953, Weir has operated and managed the Naval Engineering Test Establishment (NETE), a Department of National Defence (DND) facility located in Montreal with operations also in Ottawa / Gatineau, Halifax and Victoria. Over 375 personnel are currently employed by Weir at NETE, supporting the Royal Canadian Navy and DND with test and evaluation services in a wide variety of technical areas.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
the provision of services related to missile launching systems and their support equipment in the following areas :
Safety First : Demonstrate 100% commitment to our zero harm behaviors in support of our drive towards developing a world class safety culture.
Hardware and / or software fault investigation and repairs onboard ships and in workshops;
Development of technical solutions or changes to in-service equipment;
Support to test events including planning, data collection and data analysis;
Support to the implementation of alterations to in-service systems;
Development, review, update, configuration management and distribution of technical documentation;
Independent verification and validation (IV&V) of systems; and
Provision of training related to supported systems.
Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications :
Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered for candidates that have the ability to perform the objectives above.
Engineering technologist diploma or BSc in Engineering or BSc with suitable military officer experience;
10 years of significant and recent experience in a related field;
Ability to work with other team members to cooperatively design, develop and deploy quality solutions in order to satisfy project objectives and client requirements;
Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-experts, both verbally and in writing;
Resourcefulness and ability to work independently under minimal supervision;
Experience as a technologist is desirable;
Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally for periods of one to four weeks, 4 to 6 times per year; and
Be eligible to have a Canadian secret security classification.
Engineering technologist diploma or military equivalent (QL6), BSc in Engineering or BSc with suitable military officer experience.
Proficient in reading, writing and speaking English with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels with peers, supervisors and clients
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documentation.
Ability to write reports, technical correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, peers and clients.
Reasoning Ability :
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Preferred Personal Characteristics :
Self-motivation, initiative, resourcefulness, ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements :
Work is generally done in an office and includes occasional work on ships, normally when alongside. The employee may occasionally lift and / or move up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment :
Team environment requiring frequent collaboration with other staff and direct interaction with members of Canadian and foreign defense government and industry employees. Occasional travel to national and international destinations. Moderate noise on occasion, in lab or shipboard environment.
