What you’ll do

You’ll be out and about travelling on our trains, inspecting passengers’ tickets and collecting fares from those who haven’t paid. You’ll interview suspected fare evaders, fill out forms and process related paperwork. And sometimes work on our gatelines (or ticket barriers) helping station colleagues carry out ticket checks.

Of course, you’ll often be dealing with difficult situations, as issues with tickets can be distressing for passengers.

Your home base will be one of our depots which are located at Ashford, Dartford, Faversham, London Bridge and Swanley.

Your training

  • When you join us, you’ll be enrolled into our Passenger Services Apprenticeship Programme.
  • You’ll complete a mix of classroom-based and on-the-job learning, covering everything from functional skills to conflict management.
  • Your shifts

  • You will work a varied shift pattern, which includes weekends, bank holidays and nights.
  • Shifts can start as early as 6 : 00am or finish at 21 : 00pm (may change based on operational needs).
  • You’ll need to be on your feet throughout your shift and ready to work, whatever the weather.
  • The experience you’ll need

    You don’t need railway experience to do this role. We’re looking for people from all backgrounds to join our team.

    All you need is :

  • excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • experience working directly with customers, ideally where you’ve had to deal with conflicts or confrontation
  • good decision-making and calmness under pressure
  • the ability to be resilient, assertive and remain professional in all situations
  • the ability to use your own initiative and work well in a team
  • the skills to evaluate and interpret information and make appropriate decisions.
  • However, we can only consider your application if you live within a 45-minute travel time of the location you’re applying for . That way, we can make sure you get a good amount of rest between shifts and your journeys to and from work are safe.
