Woodlands Medical Centre is seeking a Healthcare Assistant to join our vibrant, patient focused and innovative practice who are committed to the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care. The position is for 12-15 hours to be worked over 2 days Mondays and Fridays, ideally starting late November 2024.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a Healthcare Assistant to deliver the following clinical duties (dependent on training / experience) :

Phlebotomy

Blood pressure checks

B12 injections

Flu / pneumococcal / shingles immunisations

INR checks

Health Promotion including smoking cessation advice

Chronic disease management perform diabetic checks prior to nurse review

Some administrative duties will be included in the role including stock check and ordering and stocking up clinical rooms.

About us

Woodlands is a General Practice in Ely, Cardiff. We provide a service to Ely, Caerau, St Fagans and Wenvoe. The Practice has 10 Doctors (6 GP Partners, 2 Salaried GPs and 2 GP Registrars) and 4 Nursing staff. We also provide Phlebotomy, Health Visitor, Ante-natal Care, Midwifery and Counselling via NHS staff. Woodlands is a very high achieving practice under the Quality Assurance and Improvement Framework, QAIF, and consistently receives high Patient Satisfaction ratings from our Community Health Council Reviews. We are a very busy centre and strive to ensure that our patients are cared for to the highest standards.

Job Summary

To assist the GPs and practice nurse team in the service and delivery of care management of the practice population. The job holder will work under indirect supervision of the clinical team.

Key responsibilities

Clinical practice

To deliver the highest standards of care to patients

Carry out baseline observations such as blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate and record the findings accurately

Support the wider clinical team with chronic disease management

Carry out BMI checks

Act as a chaperone as required

Undertake venepuncture

Administer vaccines flu, pneumococcal, shingles, B12 etc.

Carry out ECGs

Provide support during minor surgery as required

Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles, and apply principles of self-care

Communication

Utilise and demonstrate sensitive communication styles, to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment

Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding, cultural background and preferred ways of communicating

Anticipate barriers to communication and take action to improve communication

Maintain effective communication within the practice environment and with external stakeholders

Act as an advocate for patients and colleagues

Team working

Understand own role and scope and identify how this may develop over time

Work as an effective and responsible team member, supporting others and exploring the mechanisms to develop new ways of working

Delegate clearly and appropriately, adopting the principles of safe practice and assessment of competence

Prioritise own workload and ensure effective time-management strategies are embedded within the culture of the team

Discuss, highlight and work with the team to create opportunities to improve patient care

Administrative Duties

Participate in the stock control and ordering system

Ensure clinical rooms are kept stocked
