Job Description

I am currently working with a leading specialist resolution provider of electronic and electro-mechanical assemblies within rolling stock and varying other sectors. They are on the look out for x2 Lead Electronics Engineers to join a tight-knit team of engineers who specialise in managing the issues of obsolescence, bringing an innovative approach to failure analysis and problem resolution.

You will be joining a team of like-minded engineers who have developed their capabilities in root cause analysis, fault finding, fit and function replacements and reverse engineering. With a strong leadership team, it's an exciting time to join and be part of their growth journey into wider sectors.

Key responsibilities for this Lead Electronics Engineer role :

  • Working autonomously as well as part of a team, with the ability to effectively allocate time and resources to projects, working to strict deadlines.
  • Effectively engage and liaise directly with customers and clients - gathering project requirements, provide realistic and detailed assessments of practicality and manage expectations throughout.
  • Supervise and delegate to junior engineers and apprentices where appropriate.
  • Provide technical input to design phases.
  • Be involved in research and development processes with the wider team.
  • Ensuring all electronic systems comply with national and international rail industry standards, such as ISO, EN standards, or other safety standards.
  • Creating detailed schematics, wiring diagrams, and system specifications for the electronics systems.
  • Contribute to process improvements for the development and maintenance of rolling stock electronics.

Essential skills for this Lead Electronics Engineer role :

  • Understanding and practical experience of risk assessment methods.
  • Ability to liaise with customers, effectively gathering project requirements, giving realistic assessments of practicality, managing expectations, and deconflicting completing demands.
  • Familiarity with high speed digital layout methods.
  • Practical workshop / lab skills; ability to solder through-hole / SMD components, design / assemble wiring harnesses, crimp connectors, and machine enclosures.
  • Familiarity with diagnosis and repair of old and / or obsolete equipment.
  • Desirable technical skills for this Lead Electronics Engineer role :

  • Ability to effectively organise complex hardware and / or firmware projects, managing complexity without sacrificing functionality or performance.
  • Ability to write well-structured and documented code in c, c++, and / or python.
  • Experience with embedded firmware development for 8 and / or 32bit targets (PIC, AVR, ARM, TMS320).
  • Experience developing control systems (H infinity, LQR etc.).
  • Experience with PCB layout using CAD design tools (e.g. KICAD).
  • Experience with thermal, dynamic, and control system modelling using Matlab or Simulink.
  • Experience developing firmware to documented quality standards (MISRA etc).
  • Familiarity with in-system debugging tools (JTAG, SWD etc.).
  • Ability to simulate and optimise analogue and power supply systems using SPICE simulation package.
  • Experience developing hardware subject to emissions standards, constrained thermal environment, water / moisture ingress protection etc.
  • Experience with high voltage power electronics, preferably for use in rail applications (traction inverters, static frequency convertors etc.).
  • Experience maintaining and / or designing / developing high reliability or mission critical hardware (e.g. for medical, defence, nuclear, or aerospace applications).
  • Package on offer for this Lead Electronics Engineer :

  • Salary upto £40,000 DOE
  • Company Pension
