Job description

Job Title : Locomotive Boilersmith / Fitter

Location : The Watercress Line - Ropley Station - On site working required

Salary : Competitive

Job Type : Permanent Full Time 40 hours per week (with 30 minutes paid break) - 5 days over 7. Regular weekend, evening and holiday working will be required.

Hours : Core working hours are 0815 - 1700, however a reasonable amount of flexibility is essential

Holidays : 31 days including bank holiday allowance

The Watercress Line a heritage steam railway operated by award-winning volunteers and supported by paid staff, bringing smiles to faces through the beautiful Hampshire countryside for 50 years.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced Locomotive Boilersmith / Fitter to be part of a team to carry out the overhaul, restoration and maintenance of our running fleet of steam locomotives and diesel shunters.

As a Locomotive Boilersmith / Fitter the responsibilities of the role will be :

  • Boiler repairs, including stay replacement, plate work renewal, tubing, hot riveting
  • Undertake the running maintenance as well as overhaul repairs
  • Fabrication works - ARC and MIG welding, plasma cutting and oxy-propane cutting
  • Working to imperial drawings and existing or old components to undertake the repairs required
  • Removal and fitting of components
  • Maintaining a safe, clean and tidy work environment
  • Shunting & plant driving (not essential - training can be given if required)
  • Workshop & site improvements
  • Knowledge Skills and Experience required :

    Essential;

  • Experience of working in an Engineering workshop environment
  • Driving licence
  • Complementary transferable engineering skills
  • Knowledge of Welding / fabrication
  • Ability to read an engineering drawing and work in Imperial
  • Desirable;

  • Experience in driving or shunting railway yards
