Job description

Job Purpose :

This role reports to the Head of Technical Leadership, providing crucial technical oversight and management system development.

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Mechanical Engineer with expertise in industrial facility systems operation and maintenance, analysis, and compliance. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, oversee the development of complex mechanical systems, and ensure regulatory and safety standards are met across a range of mechanical equipment and apparatus. This role currently commands no direct line management responsibility. What you'll do

  • Lead on the design specification standards, and validation of pressure systems & HVAC, including related mechanical systems.

Ensure management systems comply with latest relevant regulations, British Standards and client engineering Standards (e.g., PSSR, LOLER, PUWER, SoMSR, ES6000 & 8000 series).

Ensuring maintenance programmes fulfil the requirements of company regulatory requirements (Pharmaceutical Industry)

Develop CBM / RCM strategies and programmes to achieve the relevant strategy.

Act as a technical authority on pressure systems (gas and fluid).

Support hazard and risk assessments such as HAZOPs, FMEAs, and LOPA related to pressure equipment.

Work cross-functionally with systems, electrical, and process engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions.

Review and approve engineering documents, specifications, and technical reports.

Mentor junior mechanical engineers, assist in the development of mechanical authorised persons and contribute to the development of best practices and engineering standards.

Engage with external stakeholders, including suppliers, certifying bodies, and clients.

Person Specification

Who you'll be

Essential :

HNC / HND qualified in mechanical engineering discipline – or equivalent demonstrable vocational training / experience.

Minimum 5 years relevant engineering experience, with significant exposure to pressure systems, in a regulated industrial environment.

In-depth knowledge of pressure systems and demonstrable experience in operating and maintaining such systems.

In-depth knowledge and understanding of risk-based inspection of mechanical systems, machine safety, PUWER and other related regulations.

Demonstrable proficiency in analytical and continuous improvement processes

Membership of a professional body (subscription costs covered)

IOSH / NEBOSH

Preferred :

Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Chartered Engineer status (e.g., CEng, or equivalent) or working towards.

Experience with safety-critical systems and engineering within regulated industries (e.g., Pharma, oil & gas, energy, aerospace, or chemical processing).

  • The role holder will be ‘based’ at Stevenage.
  • 40 hour weekday office hours pattern – with opportunities for flexible working.
