Help us create a better future, quicker

With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, invest over £5bn in transmission projects across our network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Strategic Project team will play a key role in supporting SPEN to work at pace to deliver the transmission infrastructure needed to support Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.

SPEN is currently recruiting a Design Lead to oversee the Engineering Design function for Transmission Substations in Strategic Projects. The postholder will manage design and engineering outputs, including approvals for all SPT Strategic Projects.

This role involves managing engineering interfaces with EPC contractors and OEMs, ensuring innovative designs for transmission infrastructure that meet requirements.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead transmission network access for all strategic projects to ensure coordinated delivery of works and outage optimization by working with EPC contractors, design engineers, Operations Control Centre, and Transmission Operations.
  • Establish stage-by-stage plans for Strategic Projects in collaboration with design engineers and EPC contractors.
  • Coordinate and optimize across the Strategic Projects portfolio regarding system access, outages, and interdependencies.
  • Develop pre-contract design for project stages, leading technical aspects of Substations and OHL works.
  • Serve as a key technical interface with Strategic Agreement Framework EPC and OEM contractors across the portfolio.
  • Provide technical support to Project Development and Delivery teams on design, construction, and operation of transmission substations and system access.
  • Participate in developing pre-contract designs, supporting technical development to a level ready for detailed design.
  • Assess EPC contractor design stages, feasibility, compliance, and review system access and outages to ensure timely delivery.
  • Assist in engineering reviews, governance, assurance, and approval of EPC design stages and outages, considering project interfaces.
  • Review system access requirements to optimize outages and understand impacts across projects.
  • Ensure delivery is de-risked through early-stage design input regarding constructability.
  • Align SPT standards, policies, and operational requirements with project delivery.
  • Lead technical initiatives, such as new tools, systems, and approaches, to exploit engineering opportunities like BIM.
  • Participate in and direct cross-discipline transfer of expertise and act as a key link with other engineering departments and Transmission Operators.
  • Represent SPT Strategic engineering interests at industry, regulatory, and public consultations.
  • Deliver innovative engineering solutions to accelerate Strategic Projects delivery.

What you'll bring

  • Proven experience and knowledge in designing electrical infrastructure, including construction stages and system access at voltages of 33kV to 400kV.
  • Ability to promote Health & Safety best practices in a design environment.
  • Capability to manage pressure and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
  • Experience in developing detailed designs for substations and OHL infrastructure, considering operational constraints.
  • Ability to operate effectively amid uncertainty and incomplete information, making well-reasoned decisions and leading transformational change.
  • Excellent presentation skills, with the ability to influence decisions through engineering analysis.
  • Minimum requirements include :

  • Engineering qualification (BSc / BEng) and / or postgraduate qualification (MBA, MEng, MSc), with Chartered Engineer preferred.
  • Experience in engineering EPC environments on large strategic projects.
  • Proven expertise in construction staging, network access, and outage requirements for transmission infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of Transmission Operator networks' health, safety, and technical standards.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • AutoCAD / Revit skills are desirable.
  • What’s in it for you

Alongside a competitive salary, benefits include pension scheme with double matching up to 10%, 36 days annual leave, holiday purchase scheme, Share Incentive Plan, charity matching, technology vouchers, and more.
