Summary

A vital service to support service users who find accessing transport inaccessible or unavailable due to the challenges of living with sight loss.

Detailed description

About the role

Volunteer Drivers collect service users from their homes and transport them to local community venues for support groups and activity sessions. Drivers use their own vehicles or a CamSight electrical vehicle to pick up to three service users at a time. They are reimbursed for mileage and submit monthly claims via the Group Coordinators, paid through BACS.

  • Liaise with the Volunteer Coordinator and / or your assigned service users before activities to confirm pickup times and arrangements.
  • Perform safety and basic maintenance checks on the vehicle before use.
  • Assist service users in and out of the vehicle—training provided, manual handling not required.
  • Engage in friendly conversation to ensure comfort during transport.
  • Report any concerns about the service or user capabilities to the Coordinator.
  • Hold a full UK driving license and provide proof of insurance.
  • Be committed to regular volunteering and punctuality.
  • Demonstrate a caring, understanding attitude and positive outlook.
  • Work effectively as part of a team with staff, volunteers, and venue staff.
  • Enjoy social interaction and confident communication skills.
  • Considerations

  • Some service users may have Guide Dogs; we can match you with someone without if preferred.
  • Volunteers will record monthly hours and mileage for monitoring and reporting purposes.
  • Most groups last about two hours; volunteers can stay or return to pick up users.
  • Additional information

Volunteers need a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
