DEPARTMENT : BBC Technology Operations

LOCATION : Newcastle upon Tyne

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE : £42,000 - £47,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

The role will be shift based, operational hours between 8am and 7pm, there will be some occasional weekend and overnight work subject to advanced notice. There will be some travel to remote sites and / or travel to training venues, again subject to advance notice.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

As a Regional Operational Broadcasting Engineer at the BBC, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and continuous operation of broadcast systems within the Newcastle regional centre. The successful candidate will ensure seamless delivery of broadcast services by managing, troubleshooting, and optimizing broadcast equipment, infrastructure, and workflows, supporting live and recorded content transmission, and collaborating with technical teams to deliver the highest quality output to audiences.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT :

Monitor, maintain, and support broadcast transmission systems across TV and Radio, as well as IP-based infrastructure in the transmission chain and across the region.

Perform scheduled and reactive maintenance on broadcast infrastructure to ensure optimal performance.

Collaborate with systems specialists and regional teams to implement system upgrades and new technology deployments.

Respond to and resolve operational incidents swiftly to minimize broadcast disruptions.

Provide technical support during live broadcasts and special events, with a particular emphasis on Radio OB’s (Sporting and Music Events for example).

Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, incidents, and resolutions.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree or BTEC(HND) in Electronics, Telecommunications, Broadcast Engineering, or a related technical field preferred.

Proven experience in broadcast engineering or a related technical field.

Strong knowledge of broadcast systems, transmission protocols, and networking, for example knowledge of transmitters, encoders, playout systems, and IP streaming technologies.

Solid understanding of networking principles, including IP, TCP / IP, multicast, VLANs, and routing.

Solid understanding of Radio principles, for example knowledge of Transmission chains, Audio Mixers and all aspects of Outside Broadcasts

Ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues under pressure.

Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Full Driving Licence.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA :

Proven experience in a live broadcast environment (TV or Radio), preferably in a regional or multi-site setup.

Strong understanding of broadcast signal flow, video and audio formats (SDI, IP, AES), and transmission systems.

Ability to diagnose and repair broadcast faults quickly and effectively under pressure.

Proficiency in using broadcast monitoring tools and diagnostic equipment (waveform monitors, vectorscopes, audio meters).

Hands-on experience with broadcast equipment (vision / audio mixers, routers, intercoms, camera systems, servers, etc.).

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED :

Knowledge of key aspects of post-production, long and short form editing systems, visual effects and graphics, sound design and mixing

Working knowledge of Windows and Mac based systems and software

Knowledge of Cloud based systems and software

Knowledge of Virtual Machines, Docker, Kubernetes, would be useful but not essential.
