We are seeking a Commercial Director to join our rapidly growing company in Staffordshire. As a key member of our Board team, you will be responsible for generating maximum business growth in line with our core service offerings, managing existing, new and prospective clients. This role requires a highly proactive leader who takes full ownership of the entire sales lifecycle, from initial prospecting to deal closure, ensuring consistent delivery through direct involvement and personal accountability.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of professional sales in a similar business environment, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and an understanding of an advanced multi-faceted distribution, haulage and warehousing business.

In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, the Commercial Director will also play a crucial role in mitigating business risk by identifying potential risks and developing strategies to manage them. This position will also be instrumental in ensuring that the business is best positioned for the future by keeping abreast of industry trends, technological advancements and competitor activities. The successful candidate will work closely with the Managing Director, Operations Director and Finance Director to develop and implement plans that drive ongoing and continued success of our business.

Additionally, you will provide strategic guidance to the wider business teams, enabling them to deliver exceptional service to our clients and maintain our market leading position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and execute a professional sales strategy to drive revenue growth for our core service offerings, including distribution, contract logistics and warehousing.
  • Assume end to end accountability for sales, customer retention, service delivery, and establishing the company's industry position.
  • Champion the adoption of cutting edge systems and technologies to drive growth.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers and industry stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to ensure the effective delivery of customer solutions and services.
  • Analyse market trends and customer feedback to identify opportunities for new products and services.
  • Develop and manage the sales budget and forecast, ensuring sales targets are achieved and profitability is maximised.
  • Maintain accurate sales records and reports and provide regular updates to the Managing Director.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in developing top notch business proposals that secure new business wins, setting the standard for excellence.
  • Leverage cutting edge systems and technology to seamlessly integrate omnichannel clients into our existing infrastructure.
  • Utilise the existing CRM database to enhance data insights, devise strategic sales campaigns and leverage all available marketing collateral to maximise impact.
  • Ensure data is managed for an integrated email marketing solution.
  • Establish our business as the go to provider for the services we offer in our target locations.
  • Oversee all tender opportunities to secure new business wins.
  • Demonstrate a natural aptitude for comprehending prospective clients' needs and implementing effective strategies to secure their business.
  • Conduct retrospective reviews of new business wins, analytically and operationally to ensure they align with forecasted margins and profiles.
  • Drive the business to achieve its sales targets and revenue goals, while ensuring profitability is maintained.
  • Collaborate closely with the teams to devise and execute effective sales strategies and tactics that align with the business's overarching objectives.
  • Identify emerging markets or customer segments, analyse trends in customer behaviour, and conceive new products or services to address evolving customer needs.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Sales, or related field.
  • Proven track record of professional sales and marketing, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a sales leadership role within the logistics industry.
  • Ability to negotiate at a high level and manage existing, new and prospective clients.
  • Ability to manipulate data related to a transport operation, to create meaningful and impactful partner driver transport solutions at proposal level.
  • Demonstrated understanding of distribution, contract logistics and warehousing business is essential.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and CRM software.
  • Results-oriented with a track record of driving sales growth and profitability.
  • Customer focused with a passion for delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Analytical and data driven, with the ability to analyse sales data and market trends to inform decision-making.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Able to collaborate with other departments within the business, including operations, finance and marketing.
  • Able to communicate ideas clearly and persuasively, both in writing and in person, to ensure that everyone is aligned and working towards the same goals.
  • Able to implement wide scale operation change, working alongside existing business units to implement successful contract wins.
  • As Commercial Director at Browns Distribution, you will be the strategic force behind our growth, holding full end-to-end accountability for driving revenue, market expansion, customer retention, and service excellence across our core offerings of distribution, contract logistics and warehousing.

    Reporting directly to the Managing Director and sitting on the Board, you will lead the charge in setting and executing a dynamic commercial strategy that elevates our brand, secures high value partnerships, and positions us as the provider of choice in the logistics sector. Through visionary leadership, cutting edge technology adoption, and close collaboration with operational and finance stakeholders, you will shape the future of our business while delivering tangible, measurable results that fuel continued success and profitability.

    We are delighted to offer you a comprehensive compensation package, which includes a highly competitive basic salary, a company car and a performance related bonus. In addition, you will be entitled to 25 days of holiday per year (plus statutory), as well as a day off on your birthday.
