Job description

Manchester Metropolitan University is launching an ambitious new Centre for Digital Data Research to harness the power of digital data in driving world-class, socially responsible research. This cross-disciplinary centre will bring together academic expertise, technical specialists, and advanced computing capabilities to enable research at scale – from the processing of large, complex data sets to the training and deployment of cutting-edge AI models.

To support this exciting new centre, we are seeking a Senior Azure Data Platform Engineer to play a critical role in designing, delivering, and optimising the University's cloud-based data infrastructure. You will work closely with researchers and technical colleagues to ensure our Azure data platform is scalable, secure, and capable of supporting advanced analytics, machine learning, and large-scale data processing. Your expertise will help underpin the University's ambition to become a leader in digital and data-driven research.

About the Role

As Senior Azure Data Platform Engineer, you will :

Lead the design, development, and optimisation of the University's Azure-based data platform to support research and institutional data initiatives.
Work collaboratively with academic researchers, data scientists, and IT colleagues to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing data solutions across the Azure ecosystem.
Implement and manage data pipelines, Lakehouse architectures, and storage strategies to enable advanced analytics and AI-driven research.
Champion best practices in data governance, security, and automation across the cloud platform.
Contribute to the strategic planning and continuous improvement of cloud data services, ensuring alignment with the University's digital research ambitions and broader cloud strategy.

About you

You will bring :

Proven experience in designing and managing data platforms within Microsoft Azure, including services such as Azure Data Lake, Synapse Analytics, Azure SQL, and Data Factory.

A strong understanding of modern data architecture, including data modelling, ETL / ELT processes, and supporting advanced analytics and AI workloads.

Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Bicep, Terraform), automation, and CI / CD pipelines for data services.

A commitment to best practices in data security, governance, and performance optimisation in a cloud environment.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical colleagues, researchers, and wider stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver impactful solutions.
