Job description

About the role

UPEN is seeking a highly motivated Policy Engagement Coordinator to lead its UK-wide Areas of Research Interest (ARIs) Plus Programme. This role plays a central part in advancing the mechanisms for effective research-policy exchange across local, regional, and devolved levels of government in the UK. Building on the foundations established through the CAPE (Capabilities in Academic Policy Engagement) programme, the ARI+ initiative aims to embed ARIs more deeply into policymaking processes and adapt them to a variety of policy contexts.

As Policy Engagement Coordinator, you will be responsible for designing and delivering a comprehensive national programme that supports the development of best practice methodologies, pilots ARIs with regional policy organisations, and explores innovative ways to connect academic expertise with policy evidence needs. You will also lead the creation of a peer learning and exchange network to foster collaboration and continuous improvement across the ARI landscape.

This role requires a strategic and operational mindset, with responsibilities spanning programme coordination, stakeholder engagement, communications, and event delivery. Acting as the central hub for the ARI+ Programme, you will play a key role in building strong relationships, facilitating internal operations, and ensuring effective outreach. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a nationally significant initiative that strengthens the bridge between academia and policy.

About you

You are an experienced and highly organised professional with a strong background in programme coordination or project management. You bring a solid understanding of academic-policy engagement and are familiar with the UK policy landscape, particularly at regional and devolved levels. Your ability to manage diverse stakeholders and facilitate collaborative networks is matched by your excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

You are confident in planning, monitoring, and evaluating complex projects, and you thrive both when working independently and as part of a wider team. Your attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and ability to deliver high-quality work under pressure are key strengths. You are also comfortable facilitating workshops and learning events, and you take pride in providing a supportive and inclusive service.

You are committed to inclusivity, diversity, and intercultural awareness in your work, and you actively contribute to a culture of collaboration and shared learning. Experience working within academic institutions, or with local and regional authorities, as well as familiarity with Areas of Research Interest (ARIs), would be an advantage.

For an informal conversation about the role please feel free to contact Ayden McKeating (), and for any questions about the application process please contact Rachel Dargan ().

While we endeavour to honour all requests for informal conversations, please be advised that if we receive a high number of requests, this may not be possible.

This role is a 3-year FTC and is available on a part time ( FTE basis).

Interviews will be held on 19th August.
