Our IT Services business area provides technology for the services National Records of Scotland (NRS) delivers to our customers, including Architecture & Business Analysis, Project and Programme Delivery, Service Management, Cyber Security, Infrastructure Engineering & Support, Data Engineering & Support, and Digital Engineering & Support.

Working as part of our Digital Engineering Team, you will work collaboratively across NRS teams - and with digital delivery partners - on the development, testing, delivery, and ongoing support and maintenance of IT digital services, through carrying out the majority of the below duties / responsibilities.

A junior developer learns on the job by delivering software components.

At This Role Level, You Will

develop skills while working under supervision to deliver stories in a multidisciplinary team
understand and be proficient in different types of testing
be aware of but not responsible for security
coach and mentor more junior colleagues

Responsibilities

Availability and capacity management

You support work to improve the availability of services and ensure that they can handle expected load.

Software engineering (programming and build)

You design, code, test, correct and document simple programs or scripts under the direction of others.

Modern development standards

You apply the principles of a modern standards approach under the guidance of others.

Systems design and systems integration

You assist as part of a team in the design of components of larger systems.

You support building and testing interfaces between systems.

You support the process of integrating systems.

Information security

You participate in the activities of the information security process.

You implement embedded security controls in solutions and services.

Service support

You help fix faults following agreed procedures, acting as 2nd line support for service desk tickets.

You carry out agreed maintenance tasks on infrastructure.

User focus

You support user experience analysis if required.

You work from user stories, focusing on user needs.

Experience

Lead Experience 1. Your experience writing simple programs and scripts using JavaScript frameworks and either C# or Java, allows you to design, code, test, correct and document medium-complexity programs or scripts with the support of others.

Lead Experience 2. Your experience of implementing low complexity components using JavaScript frameworks and either C# or Java, allows you to assist as part of a team in the design of components of larger systems.

Your awareness of how JavaScript frameworks and either C# or Java, work and are deployed, will allow you to help fix faults following agreed procedures and carry out agreed maintenance tasks.

Your experience with JavaScript frameworks and either C# or Java enables you to contribute to delivering solutions, with support from your team, that meet user needs

How To Apply

Apply online, providing a CV and Supporting Statement (of no more than 1000 words) which provides evidence of how you meet the experience listed in the Success Profile above.

We will test your experience as part of the sift process, and if successful, you will be invited to an assessment and interview where we will test these again along with the behaviours and technical skills listed above. Full details of the selection process will be made available to shortlisted candidates once the sift has been completed.

In the event of a large number of applications, an initial sift will be conducted using the CV and supporting statement on Lead Experiences 1 & 2 as listed above. Candidates who pass the initial sift will have their applications fully assessed against the other Experience criteria.

If invited for further assessment, this will consist of an interview and a practical coding exercise, which candidates will be asked to summarise and demonstrate as part of a presentation, in order to test the required technical skills. Details of the exercise and presentation will be shared in advance of the interview. Candidates will also be asked a series of questions to test their behaviours and experience.

Assessments are scheduled for w / c 25th August and 1st September, however this may be subject to change.

DDaT Pay Supplement

This post is part of the Scottish Government Digital, Data and Technology (DDAT) profession, as a member of the profession you will join the professional development system. This post currently attracts a £5,000.00 annual DDAT pay supplement, applicable after a 3-month competency qualifying period. The payment will be backdated to your start date in the role. Pay supplements are reviewed regularly and there is one currently underway. Changes will be communicated when the review is concluded.
